The Yoga of the Sovereign Science and Sovereign Secret

Introduction: Gita Chapter 9 reveals the most confidential knowledge of the Divine. Lord Kṛṣṇa explains His relationship with the material world and how pure devotion can liberate any soul from the cycle of birth and death. This “Sovereign Science” is the most purifying and can be directly perceived through spiritual practice.


Gita Chapter 9: 1-6 The Sovereign Science and the Divine Presence

9:1 — śrī-bhagavān uvāca idaṁ tu te guhyatamaṁ pravakṣyāmy anasūyave jñānaṁ vijñāna-sahitaṁ yaj jñātvā mokṣyase’śubhāt

The Blessed Lord said: “Because you are free from envy, I shall reveal to you this most secret knowledge (Jñāna) together with its practical realization (Vijñāna). By knowing this, you shall be liberated from all miseries.”

9:2 rāja-vidyā rāja-guhyaṁ pavitram idam uttamam pratyakṣāvagamaṁ dharmyaṁ su-sukhaṁ kartum avyayam

“This is the sovereign science, the sovereign secret, the supreme purifier. It is perceived by direct intuition, it is in accord with Dharma, very easy to practice, and imperishable.”

9:3 aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā dharmasyāsya parantapa aprāpya māṁ nivartante mṛtyu-saṁsāra-vartmani

“Those who have no faith in this Dharma, O Arjuna, fail to reach Me and continue to revolve in the cycle of birth and death.”

9:4 mayā tatam idaṁ sarvaṁ jagad avyakta-mūrtinā mat-sthāni sarva-bhūtāni na cāhaṁ teṣv avasthitaḥ

“This entire universe is pervaded by Me in My unmanifested form. All beings dwell in Me, but I do not dwell in them (as a limited part).”

9:5 na ca mat-sthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogam aiśvaram bhūta-bhṛn na ca bhūta-stho mamātmā bhūta-bhāvanaḥ

“And yet, beings do not dwell in Me (in a material sense). Behold My divine mystery! My Self, the source of all beings and their sustainer, is not constrained by them.”

9:6 yathākāśa-sthito nityaṁ vāyuḥ sarvatra-go mahān tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni mat-sthānīty upadhāraya

“Just as the mighty wind, blowing everywhere, always rests in the space (Akasha), know that in the same way, all beings rest in Me.”

Chapter 9: 7-12 The Lord as the Inner Ruler and the Delusion of the Unwise

9:7 sarva-bhūtāni kaunteya prakṛtiṁ yānti māmikām kalpa-kṣaye punas tāni kalpādau visṛjāmy aham

“O Arjuna, at the end of a Kalpa (aeon), all beings dissolve into My material nature (Prakṛti). At the beginning of the next Kalpa, I manifest them again.”

9:8 prakṛtiṁ svām avaṣṭabhya visṛjāmi punaḥ punaḥ bhūta-grāmam imaṁ kṛtsnam avaśaṁ prakṛter vaśāt

“Controlling My own nature, I manifest this entire multitude of beings again and again, which is helpless under the power of material nature.”

9:9 na ca māṁ tāni karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya udāsīnavad āsīnam asaktaṁ teṣu karmasu

“But these actions do not bind Me, O Arjuna. I sit as if indifferent, unattached to these cosmic activities.”

9:10 mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sa-carācaram hetunānena kaunteya jagad vipa rīvartate

“Under My supervision, material nature (Prakṛti) brings forth all that is moving and unmoving. Because of this, O Arjuna, the universe revolves in its cycles.”

9:11 avajānanti māṁ mūḍhā mānuṣīṁ tanum āśritam paraṁ bhāvam ajānanto mama bhūta-maheśvaram

“The foolish disregard Me when I appear in a human form, unaware of My supreme nature as the Great Lord of all beings.”

9:12 moghāśā mogha-karmāṇo mogha-jñānā vicetasaḥ rākṣasīm āsurīṁ caiva prakṛtiṁ mohinīṁ śritāḥ

“Possessed of vain hopes, vain actions, and vain knowledge, they are devoid of discernment and embrace the delusive nature of demons and monsters.”

Chapter 9: 13-19 The Nature of Mahatmas and the All-Pervasive Divine

9:13 mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ bhajanty ananya-manaso jñātvā bhūtādim avyayam

“But the great souls (Mahatmas), O Arjuna, abiding in My divine nature, worship Me with an undivided mind, knowing Me as the imperishable source of all beings.”

9:14 satataṁ kīrtayanto māṁ yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ namasyantaś ca māṁ bhaktyā nitya-yuktā upāsate

“Always glorifying Me, striving with firm determination, and bowing down to Me with devotion, they worship Me, ever-steadfast.”

9:15 jñāna-yajñena cāpy anye yajanto mām upāsate ekatvena pṛthaktvena bahudhā viśvato-mukham

“Others also worship Me through the sacrifice of knowledge (Jnana-Yajna), seeing Me as the One, as the many in various forms, and as the face of the universe.”

9:16 ahaṁ kratur ahaṁ yajñaḥ svadhāham aham auṣadham mantro’ham aham evājyam aham agnir ahaṁ hutam

“I am the ritual (Kratu), I am the sacrifice (Yajna), I am the offering to the ancestors (Svadha), and I am the medicinal herb. I am the sacred mantra, I am the clarified butter (Ghee), I am the fire, and I am the act of offering.”

9:17 pitāham asya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ vedyaṁ pavitram oṅkāra ṛk sāma yajur eva ca

“I am the Father of this universe, the Mother, the Sustainer, and the Grandsire. I am the object of knowledge, the Purifier, the sacred syllable OM, and also the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas.”

9:18 gatir bhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṁ suhṛt prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṁ nidhānaṁ bījam avyayam

“I am the Goal, the Supporter, the Lord, the Witness, the Abode, the Refuge, and the Friend. I am the Origin, the Dissolution, the Basis, the Storehouse, and the Eternal Seed.”

9:19 tapāmy aham ahaṁ varṣaṁ nigṛhṇāmy utsṛjāmi ca amṛtaṁ caiva mṛtyuś ca sad asac cāham arjuna

“I give heat; I withhold and send forth the rain. I am immortality and also death; I am both being (Sat) and non-being (Asat), O Arjuna.”

Chapter 9: 20-25 The Temporary Rewards of Rituals and the Assurance of the Divine

9:20 trai-vidyā māṁ soma-pāḥ pūta-pāpā yajñair iṣṭvā svar-gatiṁ prārthayante te puṇyam āsādya surendra-lokam aśnanti divyān divi deva-bhogān

“Those who are well-versed in the three Vedas, who drink the Soma juice and are purified of sin, worship Me through sacrifices and pray for passage to heaven. They reach the holy world of Indra and enjoy the celestial delights of the gods.”

9:21 te taṁ bhuktvā svarga-lokaṁ viśālaṁ kṣīṇe puṇye martya-lokaṁ viśanti evaṁ trayī-dharmam anuprapannā gatāgataṁ kāma-kāmā labhante

“Having enjoyed the vast world of heaven, they return to the world of mortals once their merit is exhausted. Thus, following the rituals of the three Vedas and desiring sense-pleasures, they obtain only the fleeting cycle of coming and going.”

9:22 ananyāś cintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham

“But for those who worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on Me alone—to them, who are ever-steadfast, I carry what they lack and preserve what they already have (Yoga-Kshema).”

9:23 ye’py anya-devatā-bhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ te’pi mām eva kaunteya yajanty avidhi-pūrvakam

“Even those who worship other deities with faith, O Arjuna, are actually worshipping Me alone, though they do so in an indirect way (without following the proper knowledge).”

9:24 ahaṁ hi sarva-yajñānāṁ bhoktā ca prabhur eva ca na tu mām abhijānanti tattvenātaś cyavanti te

“For I am the enjoyer and the Lord of all sacrifices. But because they do not recognize Me in truth, they fall back into the cycle of rebirth.”

9:25 yānti deva-vratā devān pitṝn yānti pitṛ-vratāḥ bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti mad-yājino’pi mām

“Those who worship the gods go to the gods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship spirits go to the spirits; but those who worship Me come to Me.”

Chapter 9: 26-34

The Path of Pure Devotion and the Universal Refuge

9:26 patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ

“If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water, I accept that offering from the pure-hearted soul.”

9:27 yat karoṣi yad aśnāsi yaj juhoṣi dadāsi yat yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kuruṣva mad-arpaṇam

“Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give in charity, and whatever austerities you perform, O Arjuna—do that as an offering unto Me.”

9:28 śubhāśubha-phalair evaṁ mokṣyase karma-bandhanaiḥ sannyāsa-yoga-yuktātmā vimukto mām upaiṣyasi

“In this way, you shall be freed from the bonds of Karma, both good and evil. With your mind established in the Yoga of renunciation, you will be liberated and come to Me.”

9:29 samo’haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu na me dveṣyo’sti na priyaḥ ye bhajanti tu māṁ bhaktyā mayi te teṣu cāpy aham

“I am impartial toward all beings; to Me, no one is hateful and no one is dear. But those who worship Me with devotion—they are in Me, and I am in them.”

9:30 api cet su-durācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ samyag vyavasito hi saḥ

“Even if a person of the most wicked conduct worships Me with undivided devotion, they must be regarded as righteous, for they have rightly resolved.”

9:31 kṣipraṁ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvac-chāntiṁ nigacchati kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati

“Quickly they become virtuous and attain eternal peace. O Arjuna, know this for certain: My devotee never perishes.

9:32 māṁ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye’pi syuḥ pāpa-yonayaḥ striyo vaiśyās tathā śūdrās te’pi yānti parāṁ gatim

“For those who take refuge in Me, O Arjuna—even those of humble birth, women, traders (Vaisyas), and laborers (Sudras)—they all attain the Supreme Goal.”

9:33 kiṁ punar brāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayas tathā anityam asukhaṁ lokaṁ imaṁ prāpya bhajasva mām

“How much more so, then, for the holy Brahmins and the devoted royal sages! Having come into this fleeting and joyless world, devote yourself to Me.”

9:34 man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru mām evaiṣyasi yuktvaivam ātmānaṁ mat-parāyaṇaḥ

“Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, worship Me, and bow down to Me. Having thus united your soul with Me and taking Me as the Supreme Goal, you shall surely come to Me.”


Thus ends the Ninth Conversation of the Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 9.

“Oṁ Sarveṣāṁ Svastir Bhavatu, Sarveṣāṁ Śāntir Bhavatu, Sarveṣāṁ Pūrṇam Bhavatu, Sarveṣāṁ Maṅgalaṁ Bhavatu”

“May all beings be well, may all beings be at peace, may all beings attain perfection, and may all beings experience divine glory.”
